About me:
I received my BA from the University of Texas at Austin in 1989 and MA from the University of Texas at San Antonio in 1996. I began my teaching career in 1990 and have had wonderful experiences teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) in high school. I also taught ESL and Elementary Spanish via satellite with Region XX. I returned to the classroom teaching 5th grade for 10 years, the last 4 were spent teaching Spanish Immersion at Cambridge Elementary. This is my second year at the Junior School teaching Spanish I and Spanish Immersion. I am thrilled to be your child's Spanish teacher and looking forward to a great year!
I am married and this year I will celebrate my 17th wedding anniversary. I have a wonderful daughter who is in fourth grade at Cambridge Elementary. I am an avid Longhorn fan and go to all the home football games with my family. I love to go out to eat and shopping. I also enjoy golfing and a good book.
About the classes I teach:
SPANISH I PAP – Spanish immersion for high school credit
Spanish I PAP/SI is for immersion students who have successfully completed 6th grade Science Immersion and/or Social Studies Immersion. This class takes the place of Reading in 7th grade so students will be covering reading strategies and objectives.
This course is conducted in Spanish and exposes students to the Hispanic culture through its literature and language. This immersion class provides communicative activities along with grammar review to enable students to improve their oral fluency and writing skills in addition to reading comprehension and fluency. In this class, students will be engaged in: lively discussions of contemporary issues, reading and discussing short stories and novels from a variety of Spanish speaking authors, oral presentations and compositions. Independent reading in both languages will be emphasized.
SPANISH II PAP – Spanish immersion for high school credit
Spanish II PAP/SI is for immersion students who have successfully completed Spanish I PAP/SI in 7th grade.
This course is conducted in Spanish and continues to expose students to the Hispanic culture through its literature and language. This immersion class provides communicative activities along with grammar review to enable students to improve their oral fluency and writing skills in addition to reading comprehension and fluency. In this class, students will read, analyze, discuss and write about a variety of classical and contemporary fiction and non-fiction texts by Spanish speaking authors. Independent reading in Spanish will be emphasized.
SPANISH I – 8th grade for high school credit
Through the imitation, repetition, and analysis of specified sentences, students are expected to acquire accurate pronunciation and habits of correct usage of the fundamental patterns of Spanish. Through
variation of these sentences in pattern drills, extensive question-answer drills, and situational contexts, the students are guided to express their own thoughts. As the skills of aural comprehension and speaking are strengthened, students learn to read and write what they can say. At the end of Spanish I, they should possess the ability to engage in simple conversations, coherently expressing themselves within the limitations of their knowledge of vocabulary and structure. Recommendation: Students performing at 80 or above in English have greater chance for success in this course.
