Ready, Set, Teach! (period 1)
Expectations: Students will attend class on campus at AHHS the first day of each week. The remainder of the week will be spent at Howard Early Childhood Center in an assigned classroom. The student will assist a supervising teacher in classroom management and curriculum. This class prepares students for the dual role of educator and parent. The student will gain hands on knowledge and experience in an actual classroom supervised by a trained and experienced teacher. The student will also observe childhood behavior and understand the importance of sending a child to school prepared for the school day.
Assignments: The second six weeks assignment will be to help the teacher prepare a bulletin board in the classroom. The holidays are coming up and this will be an important part of the kindergarten curriculum. I will send a letter to the supervising teacher and she will provide the student with instructions for a bulletin board. The student will be responsible for taking a picture of the completed bulletin board. (camera will be provided)
Notes: Please don't forget to call Howard and AHHS if the assistant teacher will be absent. This lets the classroom teacher know not to expect her TA, and alerts the high school for attendance first period. Howard: 832-5900 AHHS: 820-8850 ex 5730
Nutrition (periods 2 & 3)
Expectations: This is not a gourmet cooking class! This is a class that is intended to teach students good nutrition and basic cooking skills. It is my hope that students will leave this class with a basic knowledge of good nutrition and the ability to prepare simple, nutritious recipes. This will not only save them time and money, but will also help them achieve a heathy diet which greatly contributes to a healthy lifestyle.
Assignments: 2nd six weeks we will cover: Chapt. 10- the nutrient Water; Meal planning, table setting, manners; Kitchen equipment, measuring, how to read a recipe; Special holiday recipes.
Notes: Missing classwork can be made up by contacting Mrs. Bader. Lab classes may not be made up due to inability to simulate a laboratory experience; however, one grade is dropped every six weeks to accommodate students who must miss a lab class. If more than one lab class is missed the student must consult with Mrs. Bader.
Diversified Careers (period 4)
Expectations: This is a work based learning class. The students all have jobs and work 15-25 hours per week. Their workplace is considered a classroom and 50% of their grade comes from an employer evaluation. Each 6 weeks the student's employer or manager must evaluated their performance on the job using an evaluation form prepared by the school district. The results of this evaluation gives the student constructive criticism as well as a grade on job performance. The other 50% of their grade comes from class work in Mrs. Bader's DCP class. This class attempts to help students realize personal interests and talents. It also tries to reinforce personal standards and goal setting for the world of work.
Assignments: 2nd six weeks assignments: Part III- Career Planning. Chapt 12- Learning about yourself; Chapt 13- Learning about careers; Chapt 14- Researching Careers; Chapt 15- Making Career Decisions
Notes: The student must have a job to pass the class. If the student changes jobs, he/she must have another job lined up. In the event the student unexpectedly looses his job, he has 2 weeks to find a new job. If it takes longer than 2 weeks to find employment the student has the option of an unpaid internship at the high school until he can secure employment. This insures the student an employer evaluation and prevents a failing grade for that grading period.
Parenting (period 5)
Expectations: This parenting class teaches the importance of family and the importance of good parenting skills. A state adopted text is used to teach students principals in parenting. Because it is more descriptive of the class, we have been calling this class Family Psychology. Students will learn basic psychology in the field of families and education. This class is also a prerequisite for Ready, Set, Teach.
Assignments: Second six weeks we will be studying the challenges of parenting including: Theories and guidelines of the founding fathers in the field of early childhood, guiding healthy development in children at home and in the classroom, and handling challenging situations in family life, such as balancing work and home, divorce, seious illness of a family member, explaining death to children, and a family move to a new location.
Notes: We are now calling this class Family Psychology instead of Parenting. Many students believed that in order to benefit from the class, one needed to be a parent. This class is for high school students who are interested in family, education, and psychology. We learn about different family structures, behavior management of children, and what things to look for to determine quality schooling for your children. This class is also a prerequisite for the class Ready, Set, Teach!
